Checking DMOZ Status via Seotie

It is impossible to read any literature about search engine optimization and directories without a mention of the Open Directory Project or DMOZ. Typically, DMOZ is bandied about as the holy grail of all listings (and links). However, many have complained of the 1) difficulty of getting submitted into DMOZ and 2) checking the status of their submission.

I can’t speak authoritativly about DMOZ’s usefulness in general or its usefulness for getting that coveted link. I can say that I have tried to get submitted and have, as of yet, failed to get included. Whether it is worth it to submit or how one should go about submitting a site is an issue for another day and a better authority. But I can point to a tool that will check the status of a site’s submission to DMOZ. It used to be that a webmaster could leave a post in the forum on the DMOZ site asking an editor to check the status of their site. However, as of May/June 2005 that practice has stopped.

Enter Seotie. Seotie is a free service that simply scans the DMOZ directory on a daily basis looking for specific URLs. A webmaster can sign up their URL and let Seotie do the work. Seotie will email the webmaster once it recognizes that the URL has been entered in the DMOZ directory.

Should one bother? It is free to submit to DMOZ. It is free to let Seotie check your listing. Submit, sign up and forget. If one day that happy email stating your submission into DMOZ has actually occurred, then congrats. If not, just continue to work on all the other things that make your website one of value.
