Blog Expectations
by Paul Flyer
On the Cre8pc blog, Kim reflects on the state of blogdom and the expectations of blog behavior she has come across. I have to concur on seveal points.
Does every blog need to accept comments? Of course blogs are made to be social. Accepting comments is a way to create a conversation. However, comments have serious problems. Foremost is spam. Second is usefulness. Who reads the comments? Does anyone subscribe to a comment feed?
Does a blog have to be monetized? It doesn’t have to be. In fact, this blog serves mainly to point to other content on my site. The blog portion of this site produces little income (though I am trying to improve it). I use it to pull in traffic and point people to other places where the monetization possibilities are better. Kim used a key word in her post: service. A blog can truly serve, instead of always take.
Should a blog feed be monetized? I personally can’t stand ads in feeds. Again, not every part of a site HAS to be monetized. Use some parts to serve the other. And remember the reader. They are the most important consideration.
